Welcome and thanks for dropping by. I'm Suzy, and this is Yoga in Bloom.
I've been practicing yoga and Buddhism for over 25 years. I stumbled into yoga at the age of 19, when a friend brought me to a class she was attending. The teacher was strict and the poses were difficult! I struggled to stay calm and centered. But something kept me going back - I loved feeling strong and balanced in my favourite poses.
In my 20's I lived a carefree lifestyle, selling at craft markets, travelling and meeting interesting people from near and far. I continued with different hatha yoga styles, picked up meditation and went on long retreats. Wanting to deepen my practice in my 30's, I became a certified yoga teacher. I taught yoga in Auckland (New Zealand) and Florence (Italy) before moving to Melbourne (Australia).
In 2015 I began to seriously study the history and philosophy of yoga with eminent teachers, gaining specialised qualifications as a restorative yoga and menopause yoga teacher. I've taught yoga to people of all walks of life, in many different settings, specialising in beginners, elder women and people with diverse bodies and abilities.
I love teaching yoga because I have experienced the transformative power of years of yoga and meditation for myself and want to hold that space for others. My personal practice is based in the teachings of the late Italian yoga maestra Vanda Scaravelli and I continue to learn from one of her few personal students based in Florence, Italy. In my own practice I enjoy a deep, quiet and contemplative space for listening to my inner ocean, working with the moon's phases and observing nature's cycles. I find my joy in helping women find their own yoga that nourishes them and brings them joy and strength.
If you are looking to return to yoga or meditation after time away, or if your body has changed and you're wondering where the "old you" got to, or you have wanted to try yoga, but the teachers seemed a bit... too flexible... I invite you to try a couple of classes with me. Let's see if we can find your yoga!
